Workers who are extinguishing a fire or tackling a gas leak are always at risk of exposure to hazardous substances. For situations like these, a breathing apparatus acts as the first line of defence. Electrogas provides SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) and SABA (supplied-air breathing apparatus) in Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer and throughout Western Canada to meet your diverse needs. Our team of experts can help you choose the right equipment from our range of industry-leading products.
SCBA and SABA
When you are working or dealing in an oxygen-deficient environment, you require breathing apparatuses such as SCBA and SABA. Outside of the traditional use for firefighters during their duties fighting fires, these devices are most commonly used inside confined spaces when there are liquid spills, exposure to gas, or IDLH conditions.
SCBA and SABA are used in several industries, such as firefighting or atmospheric hazards, hazmat response, silos, and toxic chemical lines. Breathing apparatuses provide benefits including:
- They are cost-effective and easy to maintain.
- They are lightweight and comfortable to wear.
- They offer safe breathing in adverse conditions.
- Their design allows for various combinations of supply.
Types of SCBA
Most commonly worn by rescue workers and firefighters, SCBA provides breathable air during hazards and toxic atmospheres. There are two types of SCBAs:
- Closed-circuit
Closed-circuit type SCBAs supplement and recirculate the exhaled gas. It is used in cases where a longer-duration supply of breathing is needed. Example industries using Closed-circuit are HAZMAT, underground mining rescue and Military Special Forces.
- Open-circuit
They are used for industrial purposes and are fitted with filtered and compressed air. The air is passed through a regulator which is inhaled by the user and exhaled out of the system. The majority of modern SCBAs are open-circuit, including ones used by Firefighters, Industrial workers and Rescue workers.
