Benzene is a naturally occurring component of crude oil, gasoline, and many other petroleum products, making it a constant presence in oil & gas, refinery, and industrial environments. It is colorless, highly flammable, and has no safe level of exposure.
Classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the IARC, prolonged or high-level exposure has been directly linked to leukemia and other serious blood disorders.
Who is at risk?
Refinery workers, pipeline operators, tank cleaning crews, lab technicians, and first responders near fuel or petrochemical processes.
What are the health effects?
Short-term: dizziness, headaches, eye irritation. Long-term: bone marrow suppression, aplastic anemia, and leukemia.
Your legal obligation
Canadian OHS legislation requires employers to monitor benzene levels, implement controls, and provide appropriate PPE when OELs may be exceeded.
Most Canadian provinces set benzene OELs between 0.5 and 1 ppm (TWA) — levels often exceeded in refinery turnarounds and tank cleaning operations without proper monitoring. Employers have a legal duty to monitor, protect, and document exposure.
